    The Cybernetics Though Collective Project provides access to digitized correspondence and records from four institutions holding collections related to the history of Cybernetics. These materials were digitized when the University of Illinois Archives was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to develop a prototype web-portal and analysis-engine to provide access to archival material related to the development of the iconic, multi-disciplinary field of cybernetics. "The Cybernetics Thought Collective: A History of Science and Technology Portal Project" is a collaborative effort among several academic units at the University of Illinois (U of I) and three other institutions that also maintain archival records vital to the exploration of cybernetic history: the British Library, the American Philosophical Society, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to supporting the development of a web-portal and analysis-engine, the award enabled the multi-institutional team to digitize some of the archival records related to the pioneering work of U of I Electrical Engineering Professor Heinz von Foerster and his fellow cyberneticians W. Ross Ashby (also a former U of I Electrical Engineering faculty member), Warren S. McCulloch, and Norbert Wiener.

Topics cover the evolution of the crisis, treatment of students by the disciplinary system, university- community relations, and coverage of the incident by media, especially the Chicago Tribune. Audio recordings relate Eiseman's first-hand accounts of the protests by African American students against their placement in sub-standard housing in the first weeks of the program. Rae was an American specialist at Central Collecting Point, a depot used by the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program after the end of the Second World War. Materials also include a digitized copy of of Heute, a specialized illustrated art magazine (Number 9, April 1946); a handwritten music sheet; a handwritten diary, entitled "Moments, Fine Arts and Archives Work, Diary" (1945-1947, 1958) and a handwritten note with a food listings entitled "Train Special, 22.     Elisabeth Debar Russian Railway Letter File includes correspondence, transcription notes, and photocopies concerning a letter written ca. 1890-1910 by Elisabeth Debar to her sister, Clara, following a five day train trip from Paris to St. Petersburg via train which includes accounts of travelling in 3rd class, meeting fellow international travellers, delays between Berlin and St. Petersburg, the Grand Duchess Anastasia [Mikhailovna of Russia] being on the same train, and arrival in St. Petersburg. The file contains the original letter as well as supporting materials concerning rail travel in the late 19th-early 20th centuries; genealogical records and marriage records from Mairie du Havre and Prefecture de Paris; and transcriptions of the letter.
