    The digitized content of the Illinois and US History Broadsides and Printed Ephemera Collection consists of consists of nineteenth and early twentieth-century ephemeral materials mostly related to the history of Illinois and the Midwest, collected by the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections (IHLC) and its predecessor, the Illinois Historical Survey. The digitized content includes circulars, pamphlets, periodicals, posters, newspaper clippings, advertisements, handbills, leaflets, and various financial documents dating from circa 1800 to 1937. The materials document U.S. and Illinois history related to politics and government, education, religion, financial matters, and various advertising endeavors. The physical items of the Illinois and US History Broadsides and Printed Ephemera Collection are managed by the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections at the University of Illinois Library.   • Illinois Artillery, 1st Regiment Record Book (Digitized Content)

    Description
    The digitized content of the Illinois Artillery, 1st Regiment Record Book consists of the company muster book for Joseph Cross's company in the 1st U. S. Artillery Regiment. The record book contains registers of men, priority rolls, accounts of equipage, and individual accounts, all dating from 1812 to 1814. It also features additional content from the 1830s, when some pages in the book were used for secondary purposes. The company of the 1st U. S. Artillery Regiment led by Captain Joseph Cross served at several forts along the Mississippi River in Louisiana Territory during the War of 1812. The regiment saw duty at Fort Belle Fontaine and Fort Massac, with detached services at Forts Madison and Osage. The digitized content contains the company's record book, which contains priority rolls of enlistment and description; registers of men tried, discharged, or transferred; registers of dead, deserted, and missing; provision returns; accounts of clothing and equipage; and individual accounts. In the mid-to-late 1830s, several pages were used for secondary purposes. Some pages were used to record legal fees, and others appear to have been used as scrap paper by a schoolchild. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Illinois Artillery, 1st Regiment Record Book (MS 800).     Description
    The Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection contains historic Illinois newspapers from across the state, including The Urbana Daily Courier, Sangamo Journal, and the University of Illinois collegiate newspaper The Daily Illini. These papers range in date from 1831 to 1975, providing a sense of local life and culture in the Midwest across two centuries. Since June 2009, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library has digitized over 200,000 pages of pre-1922 historically significant newspapers with generous funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities' National Digital Newspaper Program. Newspapers digitized as part of this program are also available on the Library of Congress' Chronicling America web site.

  • Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History oil sketches of Illinois fishes: painting, 1878-1898

    Description
    Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History oil sketches of Illinois fishes. Unsigned oil paintings on canvas representing 51 species in 38 genera of fishes. Handwritten notes on paintings indicate the species, location, and in some cases a date which may be a creation date or specimen collection date for the specimen represented in the painting. With one exception, the paintings are on the same type of canvas, and where dates are present, they are between 1878 and 1880. Most of these paintings are stenciled on the back with “Ill. State Lab. nat. Hist. Normal, Ill.”One item is dated 1898 and is on a different much thinner material than the others. Oil sketches of fishes were reported to have been created to aid in the preparation of casts for the Illinois State Museum in Springfield by the State Laboratory of Natural History (Report of the Director of the State Laboratory of Natural History, Normal, Illinois for the Year Ending June 30, 1880, p. 3 https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/61860220). All but the 1898 painting are likely to be the oil sketches referenced in this 1880 report. RELATED ITEMS/COLLECTIONS: Items were donated to the University Library from the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Editors image collection. FINDING AID: A printed finding aid with species name, ID numbers and additional documentation is housed with the physical items.

    Illinois State Water Survey Films include a 16 mm film and VHS videos concerning the Embarras River tributary of the Wabash River; the Big Bureau Creek tributary of the Illinois River; the Des Plaines River; the Big Indian Creek tributary of the Fox River; the Kishwaukee River tributary of the Rock River; the Little Wabash River tributary of the Wabash River; the Mackinaw River tributary of the Illinois River; Rock River confluences with Kishwaukee River; the Spring Creek tributary of the Sangamon River; the Iroqouis River tributary of the Kankakee River; Spring Creek confluence with Iroquois River; Sugar Creek confluence with Iroquois River; the Vermillion River tributary of the Illinois River; and the first documented Hook Echo from the tornado event of April 9, 1953. With the exception of Hook Echo film, the content was created by the National Park Service.

    Substation meteorological records comprising observations of temperature, amount and type of precipitation, predominant wind direction for volunteer-monitored weather stations throughout Illinois, taken as part of the Cooperative Observer Program from 1887 to 1948. Records for 1862-1874 for Ottawa, IL from the Smithsonian Institution's Register of Meteorological Observations are also included.
  • Illustrations for The Fishes of Illinois: painting, 1892-1913

    Description
    Watercolor illustrations of Illinois Fishes representing species. The paintings were created over two decades by multiple artists, and most were used as illustrations in Forbes, S.A. and R.E. Richardson The Fishes of Illinois Urbana: Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History, 1908, and the 2nd edition of the same work which was published in 1919. In the Biennial Report of the Director for 1899-1900 (p. 7-8) Stephen A. Forbes included an account of Lydia Moore Hart beginning work on illustrations for the book in the summer of 1900, drawing from live specimens in an aquarium set up for that purpose at the State Laboratory’s field station in Meredosia, Illinois. Of the 100 paintings, 73 were published in at least one of the two editions of The Fishes of Illinois. Lydia M. (Hart) Green and Charlotte M. Pinkerton alone are credited for the illustrations in the introduction written by Forbes. Of the 100 paintings in the collection, 46 are attributed to Lydia Moore (Hart) Green, 29 to Charlotte M. Pinkerton, 5 to Max Bihn, 1 to A. H. Baldwin, 1 to Wallace Craig. The artist is not known for the remaining paintings. Of the fish illustrations that were published in The Fishes of Illinois, 38 are identified as Green’s in the INHS editor’s image database, 24 as Pinkerton’s, and 1 as Bihn’s. Note that there is not always corroborating evidence on the originals for the artist or creation date recorded in the INHS editor’s image database, which had been transcribed from an index card file still in the possession of INHS in the 1980s-1990s. Notations on the paintings consistently include the the ID number from the INHS editor’s image collection database. Other notations vary, but may include whether and where the image was published, artist name (usually on the back in pencil when present), the reference number of the species in Jordan, D.S. et al (1896-1900) The fishes of North and Middle America.     As a member of the Open Content Alliance, the library of the University of Illinois is contributing digital content to the Internet Archive in several areas: Illinois history, culture and natural resources; U.S. railroad history; rural studies and agriculture; works in translation; as well as extensive collections of 19th century "triple-decker" novels and emblem books written between 1540 and 1800. The Illinois Library is also a contributing member of the Biodiversity Heritage Library and, in collaboration with the Chicago Field Museum, is scanning and contributing to the Internet Archive all publications in the Museum's Fieldiana series. Fieldiana is a peer-reviewed monographic series published by the Field Museum of Natural History. Fieldiana focuses on mid-length monographs and scientific papers pertaining to its collections and research. The four series pertain to subject matter in the fields of anthropology, botany, geology, and zoology.
