  • University Honors — the Bronze Tablets

    Description
    The University of Illinois began the tradition of inscribing the Bronze Tablets with the names of students receiving University Honors in 1925. A new tablet is hung in the Main Library each year. Inscription on the Bronze Tablets recognizes sustained academic achievement by undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. According to the Student Code, students must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point-average through the academic term prior to graduation, and rank in the top three percent of the students in their graduating class. The University Library commissioned Chris Brown Photography to photograph the Tablets. Prints are available for purchase through the Illini Union Bookstore.

Digitized films include University promotional films "March of the Illini" (Spring 1963, Fall 1963, Spring 1964, Fall 1964); and "The Living Arts and the Krannert, 1970" a promotional video on the newly built Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, including an interview with Herman and Ellnora Krannert.

  • Vandermaelen Atlas Universel

    Description
    Atlas universel de géographie physique, politique, statistique et minéralogique : sur l'échelle de 1/1641836 ou d'une ligne par 1900 toises, created and published by Philippe Marie Guillaume Vandermaelen, is believed to be the first world atlas on a uniform scale. The creation of this atlas has been described as “one of the most remarkable developments of private enterprise in cartography.” (Koeman, 1969) All of the maps, regardless of the area shown, are at the same scale and on the same conic projection. If assembled as a single unit, they would create a globe with a nearly 8-meter diameter. The sheets were published and distributed in installments between 1825 and 1827. The atlas is composed of 6 volumes, containing approximately 390 maps and 40 pages of statistical tables. Some of the maps include text. Because all of the maps are at the same scale, areas of the world less well known by Europeans, such as Africa and western North America, are mapped at the same level of detail as Europe, making these maps some of the earliest and most detailed maps of otherwise unknown areas.     Digital Surrogates from the Victor Ernest Shelford Papers includes a digitized tape recorded interview with Prof. Shelford by former University Archivist Maynard Brichford (March 24, 1965) concerning his work at West Virginia, Chicago and Illinois; the Ecological Society of America; fellow scientists who have influenced him, and assisted him in research and publication; field trips; Brownfield Woods; Laboratory and Field Ecology (1929) and The Ecology of North America. The interview's length is 1:06:38. The series also includes general correspondence and correspondence, by-laws, articles of incorporation, bulletins, lists of members, and meeting minutes concerning the Grassland Research Foundation.     In 1874, the Workingmen's Party of Illinois joined the national effort to increase the visibility and awareness of immigrant laborers and began publishing Vorbote, a German-language weekly based in Chicago. The title, Vorbote, German for "harbinger," did just that by focusing on the political interests of the working class. Carl Klings served as editor for the Vorbote through December of 1875, at which time he was removed due to his "reluctance to support labor unions." After nearly two years of national success publishing "agitational and educational material" under Klings, Vorbote's second editor, Conrad Conzett, launched the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung ("Chicago German Workers Newspaper"), which was published three days a week and which focused on the German community in Chicago, rather than on Germans in the United States as a whole. By 1878, the Vorbote declared itself the "independent organ for the true interests of the proletariat." Meanwhile, in 1879, after expanding to becoming a daily, the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung dedicated its profits to start a third German-language paper: Die Fӓckel ("The Torch"), an eight-page Sunday publication. After 1880, the Vorbote served as the weekly edition of the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung. In the late 1910s, the three newspapers altered their format and content. After Die Fӓckel ceased publication on October 12, 1919, the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung decreased its publication output to once a week, replacing Die Fӓckel as a Sunday edition. In addition, the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung picked up Die Fӓckel's supplement, titled Bildung ist Wissen —Wissen ist Macht ("Education is Knowledge, Knowledge is Power"). The Vorbote continued as a weekly, printing on Wednesday; however, after Die Fӓckel ended publication, Vorbote began reprinting both the main pages and supplement for the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung. The two latter newspapers remained in business until 1924. Banned in Germany because of their radical content, the _Vorbote_, the _Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung_, and _Die Fӓckel_ significantly impacted the German-American labor movement, having begun as political organs of workingman parties, then becoming socialist, and finally anarchist papers.

    W. Elmer Ekblaw Papers (Digital Surrogates), 1914, contains a digitized letter from W. Elmer Ekblaw to Miss Eva M. Shepard of Chicago concerning Ekblaw's severe frostbit of his foot during his service with the Crocker Land Expedition, detailing his injury, his recovery and reading habits during recovery, his enjoyment of letter writing, his interactions with the Inuit, his hunting of bears and muskox, and his reflection upon the solitude of his environment. The letter was written while Ekblaw was recovering of his injury. Original document can be found in record series: 26/20/153, Box 1.

    The digitized content of the Westfield, Illinois, Photographs contains photographs in or near Westfield, Illinois, circa 1900-1930s. Woods, cornfields, farm animals, town events, and scenes along the North Fork of the Embarras (or "Embraw") River are pictured. About 350 photographs are mounted in two large volumes, many with notations as to their location. About 40 additional photographs are loose, a few identified. The majority of the pictures are of fields, farms, or woods, mainly in summertime, showing a variety of basswood, elm, sycamore, and white oak. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Westfield, Illinois, Photographs (MS 841).     The digitized content of the Wilhelm Julius Grahn Diary and Note consists of a photocopied diary written by Grahn from 1870-1873, a partial translation of the diary, and a biographical sketch about Grahn written in 1965. Wilhelm Julius Grahn (1840-1930) immigrated to the United States in 1869 from German-speaking central Europe. He arrived in New York, and soon moved to Wisconsin where he enlisted in five years of military service in 1871. He was sent to Newport, Rhode Island, to Camp Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Mississippi, and to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1879, he married Caroline Freimuth Trimpe and the couple moved onto 80 acres of prairie land in Clay County, Illinois. The digitized content contains a photocopied diary, a partial translation of the diary, and a biographical sketch. The diary was written by Wilhelm Julius Grahn from 1870-1873. In his writing, there is an emphasis on his faith in God through reading scripture, especially the New Testament, and singing hymns. He also describes camp life, problems with Native Americans leaving their reservations, and the garden he and other soldiers maintained at Camp Douglas. The biographical sketch was written in 1965. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Wilhelm Julius Grahn Diary and Note (MS 658).   • William Allingham papers, 1846-1920

    Description
    William Allingham (1824-1889) was an Irish poet, the editor of Fraser’s Magazine beginning in 1874, and one of the pioneering figures of publishing during the 19th century. His first volume of poetry, “Poems” which included his most well-known poem “The Fairies,” was published in 1850, followed by many more publications during his lifetime. The William Allingham Digital Collection gathers correspondence, visual materials, and documents. Both Allingham and his wife Helen were associated with the Pre-Raphaelites movement in England, with prominent artists and literary figures of the time such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and John Everett Millais and many more.
