    Description
    PLATO System Notes Files (Digital Surrogates), 1972-1976, contains digitized notes exchanged between developers and users of PLATO system, during the evolutionary implementation of the world's first wide-area computer network devoted to education. Digitized notes include lesson notes with developers' instructions, as well as users' experiences and questions related with the system use. PDF files contain scanned copies of the original material and .TXT files contain transcriptions of the original digitized material to facilitate its access. PLATO was computer-based learning environment developed by physicists and engineers at the University of Illinois circa 1960. It was the first use of a computer for pedagogy and the first time-shared education system. See the creator's biographical note for more information.

    The digitized content of the Abraham Lincoln Newspaper and Periodical Collection consists of reproductions of newspapers and other published periodicals related to Abraham Lincoln. There are three subcollections that make up the Abraham Lincoln Newspaper and Periodical Collection. The Campaign Plain Dealer consists of a 1960 facsimile reproduction of The Campaign Plain Dealer and Popular Sovereignty Advocate, a weekly paper out of Cleveland, Ohio created to support Democrat Stephen A. Douglas’s 1860 campaign for the presidency. The Railsplitter consists of a 1950 facsimile reproduction of The Railsplitter, a weekly paper out of Cincinnati, Ohio created to support Republican Abraham Lincoln’s successful bid for the presidency in 1860. The IHLC Collection of New York Herald Facsimiles consists of eighteen commemorative facsimile advertisements printed on interior pages of reproductions of The New York Herald, announcing Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865. These facsimile reproductions were created by companies to advertise their products to consumers. The subcollections within the Abraham Lincoln Newspaper and Periodical Collection can be accessed from this page under the subcollections heading. Individual issues of each publication can be found by browsing and searching within these pages. The digitized content of the Abraham Lincoln Newspaper and Periodical Collection contains three subcollections of facsimile reproductions of newspapers. Topics covered within these facsimiles are the 1860 election, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, Republican politics, Democratic politics, slavery, secession, and Lincoln’s assassination. The facsimiles also include advertisements from companies in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Abraham Lincoln Newspaper and Periodical Collection.   • Picture Chicago

    Description
    Picture Chicago is a collection of images originally published in books about Chicago that were digitized by the University of Illinois' Urbana and Chicago campus libraries. Here you can see photographs of Chicago gangsters, politicians, and early famous Chicagoans; the first taxicab in the city; the early pneumatic tube system installed in the the Chicago Post Office; the devastating fire at the Iroquois Theater in 1904 that took the lives of hundreds of Chicagoans; Michigan Avenue before it was widened; stately North Shore residences; the draft plans to straighten the Chicago River; and much, much more! Within the description of each image you will find a link back to the original digitized text. Picture Chicago is a joint project of the libraries of the Urbana and Chicago campuses of the University of Illinois. Funding to support building this image collection was provided by a 2009 Collections Enhancement and Access Award from the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).
  • University Honors — the Bronze Tablets

    Description
    The University of Illinois began the tradition of inscribing the Bronze Tablets with the names of students receiving University Honors in 1925. A new tablet is hung in the Main Library each year. Inscription on the Bronze Tablets recognizes sustained academic achievement by undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. According to the Student Code, students must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average through the academic term before graduation, and rank in the top three percent of the students in their graduating class. The University Library commissioned Chris Brown Photography to photograph the Tablets. Prints are available for purchase through the Illini Union Bookstore. Note: As of May 18, 2026, the Bronze Tablets in the Main Library’s first-floor north–south corridor are being reorganized to reflect chronological order and allow for future additions. The tablets will be temporarily unavailable for viewing during this project. Reinstallation is anticipated in mid-July.
  • Champaign-Urbana Historic Built Environment

    Description
    The Illinois Built Environment collection provides to the public a first-hand view of select original documents used to shape the Campus. Among others, items include hand sketches of campus plans, original trace and linen drawings of many of the Central Quadrangle buildings, four separate proposed sketches for the original Library, now known as Altgeld Hall, and watercolor renderings for the display of the Alma Mater and many buildings. This collection will grow over time as more original drawings, sketches and renderings are released for public use. Collection size: approximately 270 items. Digitization of this collection was conducted by The Urbana Free Library, with funding provided by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, an Office of the Secretary of State, with funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.   • Paléographie des classiques latins

    Description
    Émile Chatelain's Paléographie des classiques latins was produced in 14 fascicles between 1884 and 1900, and consists of more than 200 facsimiles of leaves from medieval manuscripts, with explanatory text. The leaves range in date from the fourth to the fifteenth century, and together demonstrate the range of scripts in which the main Latin classics were transmitted from antiquity to the modern world. More than thirty classical authors are represented in the collection, which has been an important paleographical reference work for more than a century. Collection size: approximately 305 items.
  • Sjoerd Koopman Library Postcard Collection

    Description
    The Sjoerd Koopman Library Postcard Collection was donated by Sjoerd Koopman, a Dutch former librarian, who also for a range of years worked for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). Koopman owns a large private collection of pictorial and photographic postcards, depicting libraries throughout the world. The collection of almost 18,000 cards consists of external as well as interior views, in color and black/white, vintage and modern, and is still growing. It holds postcards of buildings of public, academic, national, mobile, medical, museum and private libraries, reading rooms, catalog halls, etc. Koopman is currently donating all of his duplicate postcards of libraries in the US to the American Library Association Archives, which are available in this digital collection. Future contributions and their descriptions will be added to this digital collection.

Digitized material concern major decisions over board conformation and changes, University budgets, faculty designation and salary as well as salary policies, Campus management and improvement, different programs' curriculum design and revision, policies on research sponsorship and patents, and agreements with other institutions. Materials were digitized in a large-scale digitization project conducted by the University Library in 2007.

    The Great Lakes Bulletin is a daily newspaper written by and for naval officers. This collection provides a record of official communication between naval officers at the United State Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois. Each issue featured official orders from the navy Commandant, events on base and news of ongoing military campaigns. The newspaper also featured a daily comic and extensive sports section. Advice columns were also tailored for naval life with titles such as "Things Every Sailor Should Know" and "Health Hints for Fighting Men".
