University of Illinois Archives  ·   Digital Special Collections
    Description
Since the early 1970s, pioneers in the field of business ethics, both academic and corporate, have been stretching the mind and conscience with challenging questions and relentless self-examination. The founders of this discipline established teaching methodologies and produced a body of solid research. In addition, other pioneers initiated the now flourishing ethics and compliance professions that are integral to most U.S. corporations and government agencies. The Pioneers in Business Ethics Oral Video History Archive Project was created to preserve the history and wisdom of these founders, as well as the founders of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. The project interviewed over fifty pioneers via video and placed these interviews and their transcripts in the archives at the University of Illinois. The Pioneers in Business Ethics Oral Video History Archive Project includes videos and transcriptions of focused stories on the evolution of Business Ethics, its founding thinkers and practitioners, and the ideas, concepts, and best practices that have emerged. These materials are resources for teachers, students, and researchers at schools of business across the country and by corporate ethics officers who today populate most companies.

  • Vandermaelen Atlas Universel
Map Library  ·   Digital Special Collections
    Description
Atlas universel de géographie physique, politique, statistique et minéralogique : sur l'échelle de 1/1641836 ou d'une ligne par 1900 toises, created and published by Philippe Marie Guillaume Vandermaelen, is believed to be the first world atlas on a uniform scale. The creation of this atlas has been described as “one of the most remarkable developments of private enterprise in cartography.” (Koeman, 1969) All of the maps, regardless of the area shown, are at the same scale and on the same conic projection. If assembled as a single unit, they would create a globe with a nearly 8-meter diameter. The sheets were published and distributed in installments between 1825 and 1827. The atlas is composed of 6 volumes, containing approximately 390 maps and 40 pages of statistical tables. Some of the maps include text. Because all of the maps are at the same scale, areas of the world less well known by Europeans, such as Africa and western North America, are mapped at the same level of detail as Europe, making these maps some of the earliest and most detailed maps of otherwise unknown areas. Please contact the Map Library regarding this atlas via e-mail at charts@library.illinois.edu or by calling 217-333-0827.

The digitized content contains microfilm images of the nineteenth century letters in the collection, as well as accompanying typed transcriptions for some letters. It also includes legal documents and some printed ephemera. This collection highlights an emigrating family's continuing cross-Atlantic ties, with references to contemporary events, presidents, and the Civil War.
