    Description
    The born digital and digitized content of the Edward Caldwell Cherry Mine Disaster Research Collection consists of research and source materials collected by Edward Caldwell related to the 1909 mining disaster in Cherry, Illinois, its victims, and the aftermath of the incident. Materials date from 1903 to 2007 and include publications, letters and diaries, compilations of newspaper articles, reports, photographs, and indexes of victims' names. Edward E. Caldwell (1930-2015) was an engineer with an interest in local history. He began collecting and organizing materials related to the Cherry Mine disaster in 1975 and continued gathering research for the next three decades. The Cherry Mine disaster, which resulted from a fire that started on November 13, 1909, in the Cherry, Illinois, coal mine, was the third most deadly coal mining tragedy in U.S. History, and 259 men and boys lost their lives. The born digital and digitized content contains digital copies of a variety of sources on the Cherry Mine disaster compiled by Caldwell. The sources include transcribed newspaper articles primarily from 1909-1910, publications dating from 1909 to 2007, official reports on the disaster and the response, the coroner's inquest, legal documents for the mine, transcribed diaries and letters, photographs of the mine and miners, and indices of victims' names to various sources. Online access to some documents and the photographs is restricted due to copyright. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Edward Caldwell Cherry Mine Disaster Research Collection (MS 515).     The RBML Historical Games collection provides an eclectic look into board and card games from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Primarily targeted towards high- and middle-class families, they were used as conversation pieces, friendly fun, and to instigate socially acceptable interactions between young men and women. However, these games were about much more than play. They instilled ideas about religion, morality, history, language and frequently underlined the proper ways to navigate and contribute to society. This collection features many games of chance, a nod to the structured but random happenings of life.

Materials include minutes and reports of a special committee on Library Program (1931) and a report of the Subcommittee on a Bindery (April 8, 1931). Digitized material was created during a large-scale digitization project, conducted by the University Library in 2007.

  • Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps

    The University Library’s collection of Sanborn fire insurance maps includes maps for Illinois towns; rural settings are not included. Sanborn maps were produced to assist insurance underwriters in determining fire insurance rates for individual buildings by examining the buildings' construction methods, heat and lighting sources and manufacturing uses, and the same attributes of nearby buildings. The maps primarily provide information on the downtown areas of cities and adjoining residential areas. They are a record of urban development from the 1880s through the first half of the twentieth century. Family historians may find them interesting in documenting family homes and businesses. The maps in the collection are duplicates of the maps held at the Library of Congress. Maps in this image collection pre-date 1923.   • Aerial Photography Index Maps

    Description
    The Map Library maintains a comprehensive collection of over 190,000 aerial photographs for all Illinois counties, with the earliest photographs from the late 1930s and the most recent from 2005. Most of the photographs are black-and-white and are either 6 x 9 or 9 x 9 inches. Photographs taken before 1988 are county-based sets and are at an approximate scale of 1:20,000. Each year has its index. Beginning in 1988, photography of the state was created as a state-wide set, at a scale of approximately 1:40,000. These photographs are quarter quadrangle centered. Most of the photographs are products of the United States Department of Agriculture or the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with state agencies. Beginning in the fall of 2018, the University Library is scanning the indexes to all the aerial photography sets in alphabetical order by county name. Library users, especially those at a distance from Champaign-Urbana, are encouraged to use the scanned indexes to identify needed photographs and to request photographs through the web-based request form (https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/1947069). The link to the form appears on each index sheet’s webpage. Once photographs have been retrieved from our files, the Map Library will contact requesters regarding in-library use or scanning.   • Collins Collection of Irish Political Cartoons

    This is an online collection of political cartoons from the University of Illinois Library Collins collection of books, pamphlets, newspapers, maps and cartoons; it was purchased by the Library in 1917. The collection consists of cartoons drawn primarily from the Weekly Freeman and National Press and United Ireland newspapers. The cartoons address the subject of Irish politics of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and, in particular, Ireland's relationship with England. Collection size: approximately 75 cartoons.

Recordings include information on James' childhood, military service, universities attended, employment, incarceration, becoming a librarian, work with Dr. Loriene Roy and ALA, the "Prisoners Right to Read," the Freedom to Read Honor Roll, reflections on his life, the library profession, and library services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.     RKO Studios Orson Welles Collection contain radio and motion pictures scripts, contracts, correspondence, reports, budgets, call sheets, shooting schedules, preview evaluations, literary material, copyright material, publicity material, exhibition material, set designs, and notes concerning the production of films by Orson Welles for RKO Radio Studios relating to hiring and payment of actors; studio personnel; film budgets; relations with actors and producers; unfinished films; script editing process; film set design; copyright acquisitions. Types of scripts include narration, estimating, outline, and continuity scripts. This series also includes contracts, correspondence, floorplans, and sketches pertaining to facilities and employees of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre (1937-1946). Significant projects include Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Journey into Fear, Cyrano De Bergerac, and unfinished film projects such as Smiler with a Knife, Heart of Darkness, Way to Santiago, and It’s All True. Significant material includes a statement of purpose for Citizen Kane written by Orson Welles. This material is restricted. Mellecker, Historian of Chemists on November 20th 1964 and Febrary 12th, and March 15th 1965, and ca. July and October 1965.
