    The Conde de Montemar Letters are a unique collection of correspondence that belonged to the Spanish/Peruvian noble family Carrillo de Albornoz y Bravo de Lagunas, counts of Montemar. The Latin American and Caribbean Studies section of the International and Area Studies Library at Illinois is proud to offer unfettered access to this unique collection of eighteenth century letters, which provide a close and unfiltered look into the life and politics of the Limeño elite during the late colonial Spanish Empire. The letters’ topics include the intimate communication of familial matters, vice-royal politics, the relationship with the Church, urban life, and economic activity. In a time of integral changes and reforms at the core of Spanish imperial rule, the collection represents a useful source for scholars focusing on Andean political cultures, Spanish Imperial politics, Peruvian political and economic history, Peruvian-Spanish family history, gender, race, social hierarchy, religion, and other humanistic fields such as historical sociology, historical anthropology, and historical economy. The Conde de Montemar project is a product of multiple units at the University of Illinois Library. Many people have been involved in this project in one way or another.   • Facsimiles Map Collection

    Description
    Map historians have relied on copies (facsimiles) of old maps for more than a century. In some cases, the copies they used were restrikes of images from original printing plates. Beginning in the middle of the 19th century, map collectors, initially individuals but later libraries and learned societies, collected original early maps and reprinted them in facsimile atlases. Nineteenth-century facsimiles were often lithographed prints of hand-traced maps. Not until the early 20th century did photography begin to play a larger role in creating facsimile images. The maps and atlases contained in this digital collection include some of the most important of the facsimiles published in the late 19th century including Wieder’s Monumenta Cartographica and Nordenskiöld’s Facsimile-Atlas to the Early History of Cartography.   • Thomas Halligan Affidavit (Digitized Content)

    Description
    The digitized content of the Thomas Halligan Affidavit consists of a New York soldier's affidavit allowing a proxy voter to cast his vote in the 1864 presidential election. Thomas Halligan, born in 1823, was a private in Company I of the 104th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was from Lansingburgh, Rensselaer County, New York. Prior to the Civil War, New York soldiers away from home at the time of an election could not vote, but in 1864 the State of New York passed an act permitting men serving in the military to vote in elections via proxy. The digitized content contains three forms filled in by hand, giving John Tracy of Lansingburgh, New York, power of attorney to cast a vote on behalf of Thomas Halligan in the November 8, 1864 general election. The forms, completed while Halligan was stationed in Petersburg, Virginia, were signed by a witness and commanding officer. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items of the Thomas Halligan Affidavit (MS 1052). Digitized materials are divided in files arranged according with topical areas covered in the original document: introduction; childhood; russian civil war; Balinsky's studies on entomology and family matters; imprisonment of his wife Katia; his life in Kiev, in Germany, and in Scotland; his experience at Munich at the University of United Nations Repatriation and Rehabilitation Administration; the role of music in Balynsky's life; the beginning of his scientific career; the period of his life he calls "Years of prosperity"; families Stengel and Gruber; Family Syngayevsky; and other Travels. Memoirs cover a period approximately form 1905 to 1949.

    The digitized content of Tighlman Howard Jones Papers, 1861-1864 consists of the personal papers kept by Sgt. Tighlman Howard Jones, 59th Ill. Vol. Inf. during wartime, before he was mortally wounded in the fighting around Nashville late in 1864. The collection kept by Sgt. Tighlman Howard Jones, 59th Ill. Vol. Inf. includes letters, and two diaries kept during the war. The letters in this collection were exchanged between Jones and his family in 1861, 1862, and 1864. There are about 45 letters available on microfilm as well as paper transcriptions of 9 letters (4 of which are also available on microfilm). Written from Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia, Jones described his experiences in wartime. The digitized content contains letters and a diary covering Sgt. Jones’s experiences in the American Civil War from 1861-1864. Topics include the military, politics and government in the United States, and the Civil War, 1861-1865 in the United States. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections unit at the University of Illinois Library manages the physical items and microfilm copies of the Tighlman Howard Jones Papers, 1861-1864 (MS 767).   • The Rock Island Argus (Rock Island, Ill.) 1877-1885

    Description
    Argus, Daily Argus, Evening Argus, Rock Island Argus and Daily Union, Rock Island Argus and Rock Island Daily Argus Located on the Mississippi River, Rock Island, Illinois, is one of the Quad Cities, along with Moline, East Moline, and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf and is the seat of Rock Island County (Yes, there are five cities included within the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area). Rock Island gets its name from the largest island in the Mississippi River, which was formerly called Rock Island and is now called Arsenal Island. The Rock Island Argus is one of Illinois’ oldest newspapers and has been in continuous publication since 1851, when a weekly paper titled Rock Island Republican was founded by F. S. Nichols. In 1854, Colonel J. B. Danforth purchased the paper and began publishing a daily edition, along with the weekly. In 1859, Danforth, who was a Democrat, changed its name to the Rock Island Argus, to distinguish it as separate from the Republican Party. In 1882, John W. Potter bought the Rock Island Argus, and when he died in 1898, his wife, Minnie, took over its operation. The Rock Island Argus only had 500 subscribers when John Potter took it over, but, by all accounts, the newspaper thrived under Minnie Potter’s leadership. The Potter family owned and managed the entire family of Rock Island Argus newspapers, including Rock Island Daily Argus (1886-93), the Rock Island Argus (1893-1920), and its successors until the paper was purchased by the Small Newspaper Group in 1985. On October 16, 1908, the “worst fire in [the] city’s history” broke out. It was brought on by an explosion of coal dust in the yards of the Rock Island Lumber Company. The Argus published a special “Midnight Fire Edition” and reported that “millions of feet of lumber” were “devoured” before the fire could be put out. Three people were injured; 500 men were “thrown out of employment”; and an estimated $550,000 in total damages was reported. The Rock Island Argus is still in publication today, with its headquarters now in Moline, Illinois. The Small Newspaper Group—which also owns the Dispatch—combined the two newspapers, with the content varying only in their respective mastheads.
